Histiocytic pleural effusion: the strong clue to malignancy

چکیده
Abstract Background There have been many studies on the clinical characteristics of neutrophilic, lymphocytic, and/or eosinophilic pleural effusion. While caring for patients with effusion, we found that histiocytic effusion (HisPE) was not uncommon. However, few explored HisPE. The purpose present study to determine and etiologies Methods In this retrospective study, HisPE defined as fluid white blood cells comprised ≥ 50% histiocytes. Using a data warehouse, among all aged >18 years who underwent thoracentesis analysis between January 2010 December 2019 at Ulsan University Hospital were enrolled. A total 295 (9.0%) 3279 identified patients. Among them, 201 exudative included. Clinical extracted from medical records analyzed. Results HisPE, major causes malignant ( n = 102 [50.7%]), parapneumonic 9 [4.5%]), tuberculous pleurisy [4.5%]). main types cancer lung 42 [41.2%]), breast 16 [15.7%]), stomach 11 [10.8%]). cancers, adenocarcinoma 34 [81.0%]) most common histology. Conclusions leading cause malignancy, particularly cancer. Physicians should consider possibility disease if histiocytes are predominantly in

Boerhaave's syndrome - rapidly evolving pleural effusion; a radiographic clue.
Boerhaave's syndrome is the rare and often fatal condition of spontaneous esophageal rupture. Meckler's triad of vomiting, pain and subcutaneous emphysema are characteristic features of Boerhaave's syndrome. When these symptoms are absent, diagnosis is frequently late and often occurs as the result of incidental investigation. This contributes to the observed high morbidity and mortality. Unles...
متن کاملApproach to undiagnosed exudative pleural effusion: the diagnostic yield of blind pleural biopsy
Background: Blind percutaneous pleural biopsy has traditionally been performed to investigate the etiology of exudative pleural effusion in which the initial thoracocentesis has been non- diagnostic. In view of the increasing use of image-guided and thoracoscopic pleural biopsies, this study examined the role of blind Abrams pleural biopsy in the investigation of the exudative pleural effusion ...
متن کاملPrognostic factors in patients presenting with pleural effusion revealing malignancy.
BACKGROUND The survival of patients with malignant pleural effusion is considered generally poor. Most of the studies reporting results of prognostic factors are retrospective, using pleural thoracentesis for diagnosis. The objectives of our study were to reveal possible prognostic factors in patients initially presenting with undiagnosed pleural effusion proven to be malignant by diagnostic th...
متن کاملHemorrhagic pleural effusion due to pleural hemangioma.
We report a rare case of isolated pleural hemangioma presenting as recurrent, haemorrhagic pleural effusion. Chest radiograph and computed tomography of chest was suggestive of left apical tumour. Diagnosis of hemangioma was revealed only after thoracotomy and excision of the tumour mass.
متن کاملPredictors of pleural malignancy in patients with pleural effusion undergoing thoracoscopy.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Thoracoscopic pleural biopsy is highly accurate in the diagnosis of pleural malignancy. However, no scientific evidence is currently available to guide the physician's decision as to when and in which patients with pleural effusion thoracoscopy is indicated. The application of predictive criteria of malignancy might improve the indication of thoracoscopy in patients with undiag...
